چکیده

Pollution of water resources is a serious and growing problem, despite the existence of relevant legislations. Genotoxic studies on industrial pollutants are very important as they tend to accumulate in aquatic animals. Thus use of aquatic organisms to detect the genotoxicity is very useful in environment monitoring. For this chromosomal aberration test was employed to study genotoxicity caused by dyeing industry effluent on a freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala. Kidney tissue was used for the present study. The 96h LC50 was calculated and three sublethal concentrations 24.48%, 12.24% and 6.12% were prepared. Chromosomal preparations of control and treated fishes were made after 24h, 48h, 72h and 96h of exposure period. Somatic metaphase plate was prepared from control fishes to study normal chromosome complement and compared with aberrated somatic metaphase plates of treated fishes. Chromosomal aberrations included Chromosomal fragmentations (Cf), Ring chromosomes (Rc), Terminal chromatid deletions (Tcd), Minutes (M), Centromeric gaps (Cg), Stickiness (Stk), Clumping (C), Pycnosis (Py), Stretching (Stch) and Pulverization (P). Results revealed that dyeing industry effluent to be potentially genotoxic (p<0.05). Centromeric gaps, Clumping and Ring chromosomes were predominant aberrations observed in all concentrations. Higher concentration (24.48%) and maximum exposure period (96h) induces more chromosomal aberrations. 6.12% and lower than this concentration however can act as safe disposal concentration of effluent to be dumped in rivers. This type of study could be used as criteria for determining genotoxicity caused by industrial effluents, which can be used to avoid its toxic effects on aquatic

Studies on Induction of Erytrocyte Abnormalities in Cirrhinus Mrigala Exposed to Dyeing Industry Effluent

Erythrocyte abnormality test has been used to detect the genotoxic effect of dyeing industry effluent on the fish. The 96h LC50 of effluent against Cirrhinus mrigala was calculated by Finney method and three sublethal concentrations 24.48%, 12.24% and 6.12% were made. Fishes were kept in concentrations and blood was smeared after 24h, 48h, 72h and 96h. Eleven types of erythrocyte abnormalities ...

Aberrations in the Chromosomes of Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton) upon Exposure to Butachlor

Background: Cirrhinus mrigala, one of the important fish widely consumed in India, was used for karyological observations and to evaluate the toxic effect of butachlor, an extensively used herbicide in rice fields in terms of chromosomal aberration test. Methods: Fishes were collected from “National Fish Seed Farm” Jyotisar with mean body weight of 20-50g. The experimental fishes were kept i...

Research Article: Determination of genotoxic effects of aluminum on Cirrhinus mrigala and Ctenopharyngodon idella using comet assay and micronucleus test

Metals are the major pollutants in aquatic environment. A lot of research literature is available globally about accumulation of heavy metals in aquatic ecosystems as well as in different body organs of aquatic animals, especially fish. Heavy metals mainly generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in aquatic animals that lead to oxidative stress production. ROS cause oxidative damage to different ...

Impact of Cypermethrin on enzyme activities in the freshwater fish Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton)

Freshwater fish Cirrhinus mrigala were exposed to lethal concentration (5 mg/L) for 1,2,3,4 days and sublethal concentration (1 mg/L) for 1,7,14,21 days of cypermethrin to examine the enzymes activity, in functionally three different tissues namely, gill, liver and muscle. Activities of Aspartate aminotransferase (AAT), Alanine aminotransferase (AlAT) and Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) increased...
